New Zealand Online Casino Gambling

The advent of the internet has undoubtedly revolutionized virtually all aspects of human life. During its infancy, the internet was mostly used to exchange online messages as an alternate to regular ‘snail’ mail. In fact, not too long ago, on December 31st 1994, there were only 623 websites in total.

The internet boom and the consequent online gambling boom

Only two decades later and the World Wide Web has grown dramatically, people now exchange cat videos, order their coffee and even shop on the internet. Heck! Some people even meet their life partners online. The bottom line is that youcan literally do anything over the internet and gambling is no exception. Online casinos have popped up all over the globe and they now constitute a billion-dollar industry. Punters can indulge in all forms of gambling from the comfort of their own homes. Poker, Bingo, Roulette, slot machines, Black-Jack, horse racing, sports betting – the whole nine yards! Just a click away!

Online gambling laws in New Zealand

The undeniable growth of the online casino world has forced most governments to regulate the practice. Some countries ban it completely, some countries allow some forms of it and some countries allow all of it. If you are a resident of New Zealand and you happen to enjoy the occasional wager then you are in for some good news. It is perfectly legal for people to place real-money bets and indulge in real-money gambling over the internet in New Zealand. The New Zealand Government is more focused on the prevention of New Zealand based gambling websites from operating.

In New Zealand, there are three main statues in the books that cover the topic of gambling in general, namely, The Gaming and Lotteries Act of 1997, The Casino Control Act of 1990 and the Racing Act of 1971. The general premise of all three laws is that gambling in New Zealand is usually illegal, unless it somehow generates some sort of community benefit. However, these laws don’t directly address gambling over the internet which remains completely legal.
The only restrictions are against the opening or operating of online gambling New Zealand websites. The Gambling Act outlines penalties imposable on anybody who operates such unauthorized gambling websites or online casinos within the borders of the country. Fines can go up to $50,000 for organizations and up to $10,000 for individuals.

Advertising overseas gambling websites prohibited

New Zealand gamblers can choose from a wide range of safe and trusted online casino websites. These websites are usually based overseas as they would be illegal if they were based in New Zealand. A subsection of the Gambling Act 2003 has to do with such off-shore websites, the law makes it illegal for such a website to advertise or market itself to the people of New Zealand. Violation of this law is punishable with a fine of up to $10,000.

There are however a few exceptions to this law. For instance, advertisements or messages intended to prohibit, reduce or treat gambling addictions are allowed.
